It also levels the org chart in the most disarming way. The VP and the newest hire hold the same drum. Titles do not carry into the circle; a groove only works when everyone carries it together. Teams hear each other differently afterwards, because for an hour they literally had to.

What the research says about drumming and teams
We are facilitators, not researchers, but the question “why does a drum circle work as team building?” has been studied more than most people expect. Four studies worth ten minutes of your time:
- Drumming in sync makes people more likely to help each other. In a 2011 brain imaging study, people who drummed in time with a partner were more likely to help that partner afterwards, and a reward region of the brain was more active while they drummed in sync. - Synchrony breeds cooperation, even when it costs you. Across three experiments, groups who had acted in synchrony (walking or singing in time together) cooperated more in later group tasks, including when cooperating cost the individual. - Recreational music making and workplace burnout. A widely cited review proposes the mechanism: moving and sounding in synchrony blurs the line between self and other, and group music making is linked to endorphin release.
